Repair or replace?

• Springs, cables, rollers, remotes and most motor faults are usually repairable; the technician should tell you before starting.
• If a new opener needs new or moved fixed wiring, that part must be done by an electrician licensed by Energy Safe Victoria, who gives you a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Plugging an opener into an existing power point is not electrical installation work.
• A repair or replacement job worth more than A$10,000 in total (labour and materials) is domestic building work that needs a registered builder.

Getting rid of an old door or motor in Knox

Knox Transfer Station is in Wantirna South at 251 George Street (open 7:30am–4:30pm Monday to Saturday, 9am–4:30pm Sundays and public holidays). It accepts e-waste, and an old opener with a power cord counts as e-waste. Check its gate prices for metal and other items before you go. Knox City Council also runs a hard rubbish collection; check knox.vic.gov.au for the current rules.

Ask a technician first: many take the old opener or door parts away as part of the job.
